New at Adobe Ranch:

Registered Irish Dexter Cattle

First Calving Season: Fall 2026

We’re excited to introduce Irish Dexter cattle to Adobe Ranch! Known for their compact size and versatility, Dexters are a breed rich in history and prized for their hardiness and adaptability.

Dexter Cattle Characteristics

Cows:

Mature height ranges from 34 to 46 inches, with most falling between 36 and 42 inches (measured at the hip).

Bulls:

Mature height ranges from 36 to 50 inches, with the majority standing between 38 and 44 inches (measured at the hip).

Origin and History

The Dexter breed originates from the Kerry region of southwestern Ireland, where they were owned by small landholders. These resilient cattle roamed the rugged, shelterless mountains, developing the hardy traits we admire today.

Dexters were first imported to the U.S. between 1905 and 1915, with over 200 cattle arriving during that time. Today, Dexters are raised across nearly every state, thriving as one of the last tri-purpose cattle breeds. Known for producing high-quality beef, milk, and draft power, Dexters continue to support American farms and ranches.

Exceptional Breeding Qualities

High Fertility & Easy Calving:

Dexters are renowned for their fertility and ease of calving, making them ideal for breeding.

Temperament:

Dexter bulls are noted for their calm demeanor, while cows exhibit strong maternal instincts, making them excellent mothers and a valuable asset to seed stock operations.

Color and Appearance

Dexters come in three solid colors: black, red, and dun. Occasionally, small white markings may appear on the udders or behind the umbilicus, but excessive white or brindling is not desirable. Originally a horned breed, Dexters have striking mid-sized horns with white bases and black tips. While some owners choose to dehorn their cattle, others prefer to keep the horns intact. Additionally, polled (hornless) Dexters are available, and this characteristic can be passed on to offspring.
